A semiconductor on its own is pretty useless.

In order to make them useful an impurity is injected into the crystal.  This is when the magic happens.

This process is referred to as doping and is integral to making semiconductors useful.

Depending on the impurity injected into the crystal the semiconductor can be given conductive properties (N type) or properties of an insulator.

The genius is when we place the two types together.
